For most of my life, laundry was nothing more than an annoyance. Boring and tedious, it was the worst kind of neverending story. Yet somehow, as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to love this and other mundane and repetitive processes.

Part of the reason for this is that like all other forms of labor doing the laundry is subject to optimization.

One particularly subtle form of optimization is done well before the actual washing, drying, sorting, and putting away of clothes. In fact, it must be done each and every time that clothes are taken off. What I’m referring to is ensuring that all articles of clothing are not inside-out prior to throwing said articles of clothing in the hamper.

The reason I’m so enamored with this particular step is that its application is fairly universal. It applies both in the enterprise business setting as well as all manner of every-day life processes.

The tricky part is being mindful of this optimization step each and every time that you take off an article of clothing. Consistency is the key to turning an idea into a habitual behavior. In this sense, making sure clothing isn’t inside out is either a way of life or it isn’t. There’s really no in-between.

Same with learning an instrument, writing good code, becoming a brilliant lover, stilling the mind, etc. but I digress…

The payoff comes in the form of overall efficiency (e.g. you get the laundry done faster) as well as a minimization of one of the most tedious aspects of doing the laundry; having to flip out all of the articles of clothing that were washed inside out.

Some of you will read this and say something akin to, “who cares?” After all, this seems like a fairly trivial concept. Others will read this and realize why it’s so easy to get frustrated at co-workers, friends, lovers, family, etc. that always seem to do things in a sloppy, inconsistent, and generally half-ass manner.

For the latter group, I emplore you to manifest compassion. For those of you in the former group, I emplore you to consider the universality of a practicing mind and its relation to life and/or business optimization.
